Oral sedation is often a great option for patients that have a high anxiety level at the dentist. Dr. Matt has extensive experience at administering oral sedatives and may present it as an option to your child depending on their treatment needs and behavior while always taking into account their medical history.
At JPD we often call this option a “relaxing drink”. The medication is given orally about 1 hour before the appointment and allows the patient to feel more relaxed and be less aware of the dental work being performed. Oral sedation has a light to moderate sedative effect and while being more relaxed, the, patient is still awake and completely responsive during the entire procedure.
Oral sedatives often allow us to complete more dental work in a single appointment than would usually be possible with a particular patient. It also is designed to create a better experience at the dentist for the child, helping preserve or create good behavior at future appointments.
As always, your child’s safety is always our top priority and at JPD we follow all set-forth guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry pertaining to sedation dentistry.
If you have any questions about oral sedation and if it is a possibility for your child, please don’t hesitate to contact us and make an appointment.
